Warm-up three · one rule of arithmetic, ten minutes EASY
The clerk’s own rule is printed on the page: three shillings a soul. One row’s fee no longer agrees with its count. Recompute, find the row, and say what would prove you wrong.
She guides. She never guesses for you. The stamp is earned by your proof, not hers.
A parish clerk charges by the soul, and writes it down as he goes.
It is January 1793 at St Brannoc’s. The clerk enters each burial with the count of souls and the fee together — his rule printed on every page: three shillings a soul, entered at the same moment as the count. When the churchwarden audits the register, one row’s fee has grown after the seal went on — and no longer agrees with its own count.
You do not need to be a programmer to play. The press below recomputes any line’s seal right here in your browser — exactly what the guild’s rule describes. Press each seal; where the press and the register disagree, the seal is cracked. Then check the clerk’s rule to name which field was rewritten.
