THE ROYAL ROAD

Case File 003 · same crime, new kingdom — five centuries and a sea away

The scene has changed. The crime has not.

You cracked the forger at Two Bridges. Now your packet has crossed the sea, and the clerk hands you a case from another world entirely: the King’s Own Post, Susa to Sardis, five hundred years before the moor ever existed. Different messengers. Different station names. Different seals. One row of this roll was edited after it was sealed — exactly the same crime, wearing a completely different costume.

This is the transfer test. Anyone can pass a puzzle they’ve seen before. The real question — the only question — is whether what you learned at Two Bridges was a method or a memorized answer. Here, none of the surface details match. If you learned the method, this case opens for you like the first one did. If you only learned the answer, you are a stranger again.

How to crack it

  1. Recompute the seals, row by row, top to bottom. One will not match what it was pressed over.
  2. Name the lie precisely — which dispatch, and which field inside it.
  3. Say what would prove you wrong. Skip it and the clerk refuses your submission outright. A finding you can’t test is not a finding, in any century.

The clerk’s seal press — check a seal without coding

You do not need to be a programmer to play. The press below recomputes any line’s seal right here in your browser — exactly what the guild’s rule describes. Press each seal; where the press and the register disagree, the seal is cracked. Then check the clerk’s rule to name which field was rewritten.
